Welcome to Mrs. Barber's Class!Top of Page

Dear Families,

I am delighted to welcome your brilliant Toyon tiger to our 5th grade class. I hope you shared an enjoyable summer together!

It is my goal that your child's experience will be filled with personal growth as a thinker and learner. I am looking forward to starting this adventure!

I would like to tell you a little bit about myself, as well as some expectations I have for your student this year.  First, I was born and raised in San Jose.  I grew up not far from Toyon, and it is amazing how much our community has changed over the years.  Second,  this is my ninth year teaching and I love every minute of it!  I hope your student loves my class also! Lastly, I had the pleasure of spending a lot of time with my family and friends especially, my 1 1/2 old son, Aidan, and my husband this summer.   I love reading and I was fortunate to catch up on some books that I have wanted to read such as Teach Like Your Hair's on Fire by Rafe Esquith, Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan, No Talking by Andrew Clements, and The Best of Me by Nicolas Sparks.  Throughout this year I hope to share a few of these books with my class, and foster their appreciation of literature across the curriculum.

Next, I would like to share with you my expectations for the year.  Toyon Elementary follows many rules to live by, and our motto is "Take care of yourself, take care of others, and take care of our school."  I expect all of our students to remember this motto to help them throughout the year.

In the upper grades, we expect all of our students to work hard and take pride in their work.  We expect that they will ask questions if they do not understand something.  We expect that they are positive role models in the classroom, at recess, at lunch, and in our community.

I look forward to a dynamic, and fun year of teaching and learning.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Barber
